Southampton Could Avoid German Legal Battle by Selling Caspar Jander

FC Nürnberg’s potential legal challenge against Southampton could disappear if the Championship club decides to sell Caspar Jander before the summer transfer window closes.

German newspaper BILD has provided an update on the situation, with Nürnberg continuing to assess whether they have grounds to take action over the “Spy Gate” controversy from last season.

The issue has caused frustration in Germany because Southampton’s failure to secure promotion to the Premier League meant Nürnberg missed out on a €1 million payment linked to Jander’s transfer.

Nürnberg sporting director Joti Chatzialexiou previously revealed that the club would investigate its legal options. Speaking to BILD again on Friday, he confirmed that the matter remains under consideration.

“We are continuing to have our potential claims thoroughly reviewed by our lawyers,” he said. “Since the statute of limitations has not yet expired, we are under no immediate time pressure.”

Nürnberg to continue legal assessment

Nürnberg are expected to take a closer look at the situation once the transfer window has closed. At present, the German club appears to be the only party considering legal action against Southampton.

No lawsuit has been officially lodged so far. That also applies to Southampton players who had previously considered legal action over bonuses they reportedly missed out on following the club’s failure to gain promotion.

One way Southampton could potentially resolve the situation would be by selling Jander before the transfer deadline.

The 23-year-old midfielder continues to attract interest from some of Germany’s leading clubs, with BILD naming VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig among those monitoring his situation.

Jander sale could benefit Nürnberg

A transfer for Jander could provide Nürnberg with financial compensation because their original agreement with Southampton reportedly included a sell-on clause.

That means Nürnberg would receive a percentage of any future transfer fee generated by the midfielder.

Such a payment could potentially persuade the German club to abandon any plans for further legal action against Southampton. However, Nürnberg could also decide that receiving money from a future transfer would not prevent them from pursuing their original claim.

For now, their lawyers are continuing to examine the case. Southampton’s decision over Jander’s future could ultimately determine whether the dispute develops into a full legal battle or quietly comes to an end.
