Middlesbrough’s New Partnership Is Off to a Flying Start With More to Come
Middlesbrough may still be in the early stages of the 2026/27 campaign, but there are already encouraging signs of a partnership that could play a major role in Kim Hellberg’s ambitions.
Former Boro defender Tommy Smith has been following developments at his old club and has been particularly impressed by the recruitment carried out during the summer transfer window.
Middlesbrough appear to have strengthened effectively, with new forward Will Lankshear making an immediate impact after arriving from Tottenham. The striker has already found the net three times since completing his move.
However, it is the emerging relationship between Lankshear and midfielder Seb Berhalter that has really captured Smith’s attention. Berhalter has joined fellow Americans Aidan Morris and Max Arfsten at the Riverside and looks capable of adding another dimension to Boro’s attack.
Speaking to ITV, Smith highlighted the growing American connection within the squad and believes the arrivals can complement Morris well.
He said Berhalter has already shown glimpses of why Middlesbrough were keen to bring him in, praising his ability to operate around the penalty area, move the ball forward and contribute goals.
Smith was also impressed by the midfielder’s quality from set pieces, something that could prove particularly valuable throughout the season. Berhalter had already demonstrated that ability during pre-season against Espanyol.
There have also been early indications that Berhalter and Lankshear could develop a productive understanding. Berhalter provided the assist for Lankshear’s goal against Wrexham, giving Smith plenty of reason to believe their partnership could become increasingly effective.
The former defender is keen to see how the pair develop as they spend more time playing together and believes their chemistry could improve significantly over the coming months.
Berhalter also has the benefit of already having a strong relationship with Morris, who has been a close friend of his for several years. Smith believes that familiarity can make a significant difference when a player moves to a new country and club.
Having someone like Morris around can help Berhalter settle into life at Middlesbrough, from adapting to his new surroundings to getting advice on everyday matters. The same support should also benefit Arfsten as he continues to adjust.
If Berhalter and Lankshear can build on their promising early connection, Middlesbrough could have another exciting attacking combination capable of making a significant contribution to their Premier League ambitions.
