Chris Davies Under Pressure as Birmingham City Sack Prediction Emerges
Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has been tipped to lose his job before the first international break of the season, with EFL podcaster Tom Garratt making the prediction on the latest episode of The Pyramid Podcast.
The Blues began their 2026/27 Championship campaign with a goalless draw against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. It was a disciplined defensive display from Birmingham, but the match offered little excitement in attack.
Patrick Bamford came closest to breaking the deadlock, while Sheffield United managed only three attempts throughout the game. Although Birmingham looked solid without the ball, their lack of attacking threat could become a concern.
Their away form was already a weakness last season, with only four Championship teams recording fewer points on the road. The opening-day draw did little to suggest that issue has been resolved, and improving away results will be crucial if Birmingham are serious about mounting a promotion challenge.
Davies tipped to leave Birmingham before October
Speaking on The Pyramid, Garratt suggested Birmingham’s struggles away from home could contribute to a disappointing start and eventually put Davies’ position at risk.
The podcaster went as far as predicting that Davies will no longer be in charge by the time Birmingham face West Bromwich Albion following the October international break.
Garratt believes Birmingham’s supporters are becoming increasingly frustrated by the team’s inability to replicate their strong home performances when playing away.
He also argued that the club’s hierarchy has created an environment in which results and promotion ambitions are now extremely important. While Davies earned considerable credit after leading Birmingham to a record-breaking League One campaign in his first season, that goodwill is beginning to diminish.
The club’s progress away from the pitch has been impressive over the past year, and Garratt feels Birmingham are now in a position where failure to compete near the top of the Championship could result in the board making a managerial change.
Difficult fixtures could increase the pressure
Davies is likely to face considerable scrutiny because of Birmingham’s lofty ambitions. Last season, he guided the Blues to their best league finish in 10 years, but finishing 10th was still viewed as disappointing given the club’s expectations.
The upcoming run of fixtures gives Birmingham little room for error. Before the international break, they are scheduled to face Bristol City, Wrexham, Southampton, Wolves, Norwich City, Derby County and Middlesbrough.
Several of those opponents finished in the upper half of the Championship last season, meaning Birmingham will quickly discover whether they are capable of competing with the leading sides.
The fixture list includes home meetings with Bristol City, Southampton, Wolves and Middlesbrough, alongside difficult away trips to Wrexham, Norwich and Derby.
That seven-game sequence could therefore prove decisive in shaping Birmingham’s season and Davies’ future.
Strong results could change the narrative
However, the pressure on Davies could work in the opposite direction if Birmingham produce an impressive run of results.
A strong start against several teams expected to challenge near the top would immediately strengthen Davies’ position and demonstrate that Birmingham have genuine promotion credentials.
Their home form offers some encouragement. Only three visiting teams managed to win at St Andrew’s last season, while Coventry City were beaten there and Millwall suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat. Ipswich Town also escaped with a point on the opening weekend despite being pushed hard.
The major challenge remains reproducing that level of performance on the road.
If Birmingham can improve their away record while continuing to make St Andrew’s a difficult venue for opponents, Davies could quickly silence the doubts surrounding his position.
But if the Blues continue struggling away from home and fail to match the expectations surrounding the club, the pressure on Davies could become intense before the October international break.
