Chris Davies provides positive Tom Wagner recovery update after summer calls

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has offered an encouraging update on chairman Tom Wagner, revealing that the club’s American owner is making significant progress in his recovery after suffering a stroke earlier this year.

Wagner had been a highly visible presence at St Andrew’s during the first two-and-a-half years of Knighthead’s ownership. However, his involvement has been reduced over the past six months following the health setback he suffered in February.

Knighthead previously provided supporters with a brief update on Wagner’s condition ahead of Birmingham’s pre-season friendly against Barcelona, confirming that he continued to make strong progress and remained grateful for the messages of support from Blues supporters.

Davies has now revealed that he has remained in contact with Wagner throughout the summer, including through several video calls.

Speaking to BBC Radio WM ahead of the new Championship campaign, Davies described Wagner as an important figure within the club and admitted that his absence had been noticeable.

The Birmingham boss said the news of Wagner’s stroke had been shocking for everyone connected with the club, but stressed that Wagner’s recovery and wellbeing were far more important than football matters.

Davies explained that he had spoken with the chairman on several occasions during the summer and was encouraged by the progress he had seen.

Wagner’s personality and presence have made him a major figure around St Andrew’s since Knighthead took control of the club, meaning his absence has naturally changed the atmosphere around Birmingham.

Knighthead maintaining close communication

Although Wagner has been unable to maintain his usual presence in Birmingham, the club’s ownership group has continued to provide support on the ground.

Andrew Shannahan and Matt Alvarez have represented Knighthead in Birmingham, while Tom Brady has remained in regular communication with Davies.

Davies also highlighted the continued involvement of Jeremy Dale, ensuring that communication between the football department and the ownership remains consistent.

The manager’s comments will provide encouragement for Birmingham supporters, particularly those who have continued to send messages of support to Wagner throughout his recovery.

With Birmingham preparing for another important season following their return to the Championship, Davies’ update suggests that Wagner remains closely connected to the club despite his current absence from St Andrew’s.
