Tony Watt outlines Celtic’s next step if Daizen Maeda departs
Tony Watt believes Celtic F.C. would find it almost impossible to replace Daizen Maeda directly if he leaves, but says the team can still move forward by improving across the squad.
Watt pointed out that Maeda’s speed, pressing and relentless work rate make him a rare type of player, one who offers far more than just goals. His ability to stretch defences and influence games from multiple positions has made him a key figure for Celtic.

Speaking about the squad, Watt admitted there are areas that still need strengthening and suggested the team cannot continue depending so heavily on Maeda to carry the attacking burden.
He highlighted how Maeda’s impact goes beyond scoring, noting that his pressing supports both the striker and wider attacking players, making him valuable in several tactical roles.
Watt believes that if the Japanese forward does move on, Celtic may need to strengthen in more than one position to make up for what they would lose.
Maeda’s performances at the end of last season only underlined his importance, with the forward scoring in each of Celtic’s final seven matches, including memorable goals against Rangers F.C. and Heart of Midlothian F.C. as the Hoops sealed another league title.
