Ibrox scramble begins as Rangers react to damaging double departure

Rangers have made signing at least one new right-back their top transfer priority this summer following two significant departures that have left the squad short of options.

The exits of long-serving captain James Tavernier and loanee Max Aarons have created a major gap on the right side of defence, forcing Ibrox chiefs to move quickly in the market.

Tavernier opted to bring an end to his time at Rangers following the conclusion of last season, while Aarons has returned to Bournemouth after his temporary spell in Glasgow. Their departures leave Dujon Sterling as the club’s only recognised senior right-back heading into pre-season.

However, concerns over Sterling’s injury record and fitness struggles have increased the urgency for reinforcements, with Rangers now viewing the position as a key area requiring immediate attention.

After a disappointing third-place finish in the Scottish Premiership, club officials have been assessing weaknesses throughout the squad, with multiple positions identified for strengthening during the summer rebuild.

Despite broader plans to improve the team, right-back has emerged as the immediate focus due to the lack of depth available.

Rangers had initially planned to heavily back Danny Röhl in the transfer market with several additions across the squad, but those plans could now be complicated by uncertainty surrounding the manager’s future.

The German coach is reportedly edging closer to a move to RB Salzburg after emerging as the Austrian club’s preferred choice to replace Daniel Beichler. Even so, Rangers are understood to remain committed to strengthening key positions regardless of who is in charge next season.

Behind the scenes, recruitment staff are already exploring replacement options, with a number of right-backs believed to be under consideration following the departures of Tavernier and Aarons.

With pre-season approaching quickly and only Sterling available in the role, Rangers know they cannot afford delays if they are to avoid being exposed in one of the squad’s most important positions.

The coming weeks are expected to be crucial as Rangers attempt to reshape their defence and recover from a frustrating campaign.
