Ex-Millwall ace wanted by Blackburn and Stoke, but only if one thing happens
Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City are both reportedly considering a move for former Millwall defender Danny McNamara this summer — but only if the right conditions fall into place.
The two Championship clubs are preparing for another season in the division after disappointing campaigns that saw them battle near the bottom of the table rather than compete higher up.

Blackburn narrowly avoided relegation after finishing 20th, with Michael O’Neill arriving to steady the ship and guide the club to safety. Stoke, meanwhile, slipped from top-half ambitions to a 17th-place finish, ending the season eight points above the drop zone.
Injuries played a major role in both clubs’ struggles, disrupting consistency and exposing weaknesses in squad depth across key areas.
As a result, recruitment is expected to be a priority this summer, and both sides are believed to be exploring defensive reinforcements — including the possibility of signing free-agent right-back Danny McNamara.
However, reports suggest any move would likely depend on specific circumstances, with Blackburn and Stoke currently viewing the former Millwall man as a backup option rather than an immediate priority.
At Blackburn, right-back is already considered a position of strength following Ryan Alebiosu’s impressive performances since joining from Belgian side KV Kortrijk last summer. The Nigerian international has attracted attention from clubs across Europe, with interest reportedly emerging from Everton, Wolfsburg and Genoa in recent months.
Stoke are also relatively settled in that position thanks to Junior Tchamadeu, who has continued to develop since arriving from Colchester United and recently committed his future to the club with a new contract.
Even so, both teams are understood to be keen to strengthen depth in the position, particularly after injuries exposed weaknesses in squad cover last season.
McNamara, 27, recently became available after leaving Millwall at the end of his contract, bringing an end to a long association with the club where he made 166 appearances in all competitions.
Having spent much of his career at The Den — aside from loan spells with Newport County and St Johnstone — the defender is now searching for a new challenge for the first time as a permanent free agent.
Recent injuries and reduced opportunities following Tristan Crama’s emergence limited his involvement last season, but Blackburn and Stoke appear ready to monitor the situation should the conditions for a move become favourable.
