Celtic open talks over Martin O’Neill assistant and long-term managerial strategy

Former Celtic defender Efraín Juárez has reportedly emerged as a surprise candidate to return to the club as part of Martin O’Neill’s coaching set-up.

According to reports from Mexican outlet JuanFutbol, Celtic have held discussions with Juárez over a possible move back to Glasgow, with the former defender potentially joining O’Neill’s backroom staff. The report also suggests the long-term idea could involve Juárez eventually stepping into the managerial role after O’Neill.

The Irishman was only recently confirmed as Celtic manager on a one-year contract, with the option of an additional season, naturally prompting speculation over the club’s succession planning beyond the short term.

Juárez, now 38, spent time at Celtic after arriving from Pumas in 2010 and has since been developing his coaching career following retirement. He recently departed Pumas and is believed to be open to opportunities in European football once again.

Reports claim Celtic could offer the Mexican a route back into the club by initially working under O’Neill, allowing him to gain valuable experience within the current structure before potentially being considered for a more senior role in the future.

At present, however, the speculation remains unconfirmed and should be viewed as early reports rather than a concrete development.

The situation also raises fresh questions about Celtic’s current coaching set-up.

Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham both worked alongside O’Neill during the closing stages of last season, playing a role in helping Celtic recover from a difficult position to secure both the Scottish Premiership title and the Scottish Cup.

Despite their involvement, no official confirmation has yet been provided regarding whether either man will remain part of the coaching staff moving forward.

O’Neill has spoken positively about both coaches in recent months, and many supporters are eager to see continuity maintained after a successful finish to the campaign. Given the trust already built between them, retaining familiar faces within the backroom team would appear a logical step.

Whether any reported interest in Juárez affects the futures of Maloney or Fotheringham remains unclear. It may simply represent Celtic exploring ways to strengthen the coaching structure, or it could point to broader long-term planning behind the scenes.

For now, supporters are still waiting for official clarity over who will make up O’Neill’s staff as preparations for the new season continue.
