Rangers manager shortlist revealed with Hearts boss among five candidates amid Röhl uncertainty
Rangers could soon be forced into another managerial search after reports suggested Danny Röhl is in discussions with Red Bull Salzburg over a potential move to Austria.
The former Sheffield Wednesday manager, who only recently arrived at Ibrox, is said to be a leading candidate for the Salzburg job. Should Röhl depart, Rangers would likely move swiftly to appoint a replacement with the summer transfer window opening on Monday.

One name expected to feature prominently in any discussion is Derek McInnes. The Hearts boss enjoyed an outstanding campaign at Tynecastle, guiding his side to a remarkable finish above Rangers in the Scottish Premiership. McInnes had previously been considered for the Rangers role before Röhl’s appointment but opted to stay in Edinburgh, having only recently taken charge at Hearts.
The former Aberdeen manager famously rejected the chance to manage Rangers back in 2017, though circumstances at Ibrox have changed significantly since then. If the position becomes available again, McInnes is likely to emerge as one of the frontrunners.
Steven Gerrard could also re-enter the frame. The former Rangers boss has been without a club since leaving Saudi side Al-Ettifaq and was reportedly approached before Röhl took over but declined the opportunity to return at that stage.
Rob Edwards is another manager who may attract interest. Recently dismissed by Wolverhampton Wanderers in a decision that surprised many, Edwards still retains a strong reputation despite overseeing relegation. Rangers could view the Englishman as an ambitious appointment, although Championship clubs are also expected to monitor his availability.
Kevin Muscat remains a familiar name whenever the Rangers job becomes vacant. The current Shanghai Port manager has longstanding links to the club after playing at Ibrox between 2002 and 2003. Muscat has enjoyed managerial success in Australia, Japan and China, winning league titles across multiple countries, and was reportedly close to landing the role last year before contractual complications prevented a deal.
Sean Dyche also continues to be mentioned in connection with the Rangers dugout. Previously linked in both 2022 and before Röhl’s appointment, the experienced manager is available following a difficult spell with Nottingham Forest. While he is believed to have shown little interest in the role in the past, Dyche would likely prove a popular choice among many supporters if his stance changed.
With uncertainty surrounding Röhl’s future, Rangers may soon find themselves revisiting a familiar debate over who should lead the club into a crucial new season.
