Celtic facing big problems after controversial board announcement

Martin O’Neill is reportedly on the verge of being confirmed as Celtic’s next permanent manager after initially agreeing to return on a temporary basis.

The 74-year-old enjoyed impressive success across two separate interim spells at Parkhead, first stepping in after Brendan Rodgers and later replacing Wilfried Nancy, and now appears set to extend his stay in Glasgow.

Having guided Celtic to both the Scottish Premiership title and Scottish Cup during his latest spell in charge, O’Neill quickly emerged as the club hierarchy’s preferred long-term option — provided he was willing to continue.

However, former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown believes the decision to hand O’Neill another short-term agreement merely postpones deeper issues facing the club.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown claimed Celtic have delayed “major problems” by opting for the safe choice rather than committing to a fresh long-term direction.

Reports suggest O’Neill is close to signing a one-year contract, with an option for an additional season, though critics argue the arrangement highlights the board’s reluctance to make a decisive long-term appointment.

Back in January, Football Insider reported that O’Neill was open to remaining at Celtic following a successful caretaker spell, with the club eager to avoid repeating past mistakes surrounding previous managerial appointments.

That caution, particularly after concerns over Wilfried Nancy’s tenure, appears to have pushed the board toward familiarity and stability once again.

Despite the criticism, O’Neill remains highly respected around Parkhead after delivering silverware and restoring momentum, while also maintaining strong relationships within the dressing room.

“Celtic have decided they’re sticking with Martin O’Neill,” Brown said.

“He’s done them a massive favour and a fantastic job on an interim basis. He won the league, won the cup and the players seemed happy under him.”
