Middlesbrough F.C. reportedly uncover fresh evidence in expanding Southampton F.C. spying scandal

Middlesbrough F.C. are reportedly preparing to hand fresh evidence to the EFL as the growing “Spygate” controversy involving Southampton F.C. takes another dramatic turn.

The scandal first erupted ahead of the Championship play-off semi-final between the two clubs after allegations emerged that a Southampton staff member had been caught observing a Middlesbrough training session at Rockliffe Park just 48 hours before the first leg at the Riverside Stadium.

That opening match finished 0-0, before Southampton eventually progressed from the tie after Shea Charles scored a late extra-time winner to seal a 2-1 aggregate victory for Tonda Eckert’s side.

However, the fallout from the incident continues to intensify. According to reports from The Sun, Middlesbrough now claim to possess evidence from two additional Championship clubs who allegedly believe Southampton also spied on their training sessions during the season.

The report states that Boro intend to present the new material during the upcoming EFL disciplinary hearing as they push for severe punishment if Southampton are found guilty of breaching league regulations.

Among the sanctions Middlesbrough are reportedly seeking is the possibility of Southampton being removed from the Championship play-off final against Hull City A.F.C. on May 23. The report adds that Middlesbrough’s players have been told to remain prepared in case the club is reinstated into the final at Wembley.

Boro are also said to possess CCTV footage allegedly showing the individual accused of spying at the club’s training ground with recording equipment. Reports claim the person was confronted by staff members, asked to delete the footage, and then left the premises.

No official date has yet been confirmed for the EFL hearing, though pressure is mounting for a swift decision given how close the play-off final now is.

The controversy has also created increasingly tense media situations for Southampton boss Eckert. Following the victory over Middlesbrough, the 33-year-old reportedly walked out of a press conference after being asked directly by a journalist whether he was “a cheat,” with Southampton’s media officer immediately intervening and calling for respect.

With allegations now reportedly extending beyond Middlesbrough alone, the situation threatens to become one of the most explosive disciplinary cases the Championship has seen in recent years.
