A fresh twist has reportedly emerged in the growing Southampton F.C. “Spygate” controversy after claims that the alleged staff member involved may have accidentally left behind key evidence linked to the incident.

According to reports, the Southampton employee accused of spying on Middlesbrough F.C.’s training session allegedly used his bank card at a nearby golf course owned by Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson shortly before the controversy unfolded.

The allegations have added another dramatic layer to a saga that continues to overshadow Southampton’s push for promotion to the Premier League.

Despite defeating Middlesbrough 2-1 after extra time at St Mary’s to secure a place in the Championship play-off final against Hull City A.F.C., Southampton’s participation at Wembley is still not guaranteed as the EFL investigation continues.

Shea Charles scored the decisive late winner to send the Saints through, but attention quickly returned to the disciplinary case hanging over the club.

Middlesbrough allege that a Southampton staff member was caught filming their training session using a mobile phone two days before the first leg of the semi-final, which ended in a 0-0 draw at the Riverside Stadium.

Southampton have confirmed they are cooperating fully with the investigation, while the EFL is reportedly attempting to fast-track proceedings so a verdict can be reached well before the play-off final on May 23.

Middlesbrough are believed to be pushing aggressively for sporting sanctions if Southampton are found guilty, with reports suggesting the club wants the Saints removed from the play-offs altogether. Boro are even said to be continuing preparations in case they are reinstated into the final themselves.

As evidence continues to be gathered, the latest claims surrounding the alleged use of a bank card near the training ground are expected to form part of Middlesbrough’s case as the investigation intensifies.
