Six out-of-contract players Birmingham City F.C. and Championship clubs will compete to sign
Every summer brings a standout free agent in the EFL Championship, and in 2026 that player looks to be Dan Neil. The midfielder is set to leave Sunderland A.F.C. when his contract expires, having spent the latter part of the season on loan at Ipswich Town F.C..
Promotion to the Premier League with Ipswich remains a possibility, but if Neil stays in the Championship, Birmingham City F.C. could push strongly for his signature. However, they will face competition, with Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C.already showing interest.

With over 150 Championship appearances, Neil headlines a strong group of free agents. Birmingham are also expected to look at reinforcements across the pitch. In goal, Karl Darlow could be an option if he leaves Leeds United F.C., while Dael Fry may strengthen the defence if he departs Middlesbrough F.C..
Midfield additions are also likely, with Josh Laurent and Jefferson Lerma among experienced options attracting interest. Up front, Ross Stewart could become available if Southampton F.C. secure promotion.
