Mark Robins sends message to Frank Lampard and Doug King amid Coventry promotion push
Mark Robins has urged Stoke City F.C. to follow the example set by his former club Coventry City F.C., as they close in on a long-awaited return to the Premier League.
Robins congratulated Coventry, current boss Frank Lampard and chairman Doug King, with the Sky Blues on the brink of promotion. A point against Blackburn Rovers F.C. would mathematically confirm it, although their superior goal difference already has them preparing for life back in the top flight for the first time since 2001.

The achievement marks the culmination of a journey largely built under Robins, who spent nearly eight years transforming Coventry from League Two strugglers into Championship contenders. During his tenure, the club reached a play-off final in 2023 and an FA Cup semi-final the following year before he departed last November.
Since then, Lampard has taken the team forward, guiding them back into the top six and maintaining strong form throughout the current campaign. Robins praised his successor for elevating the club further, highlighting the stability off the pitch, the strength of the squad, and the ambition of the ownership.
He believes Coventry are not aiming for a short stay in the Premier League, but rather to establish themselves long-term after a 25-year absence. Robins compared their rise to other long-term rebuilds, noting how persistence and smart decision-making can eventually deliver success.
Looking ahead, Robins hopes Stoke can replicate that progress in the coming years. He pointed to the club’s strong infrastructure, including its training facilities and overall environment, but stressed the need for greater squad depth, consistent player availability, and improved recruitment.
He also emphasised the importance of identifying and developing undervalued talent—players who can grow into key contributors over time—as well as maintaining steady progress rather than expecting instant success.
Although Stoke were in the top six earlier this season, they were unable to sustain their form. Robins acknowledged both the positives and setbacks of the campaign, but remains optimistic about building a team capable of competing at the top end of the table.
With fewer parachute clubs dominating the division this season, he noted that opportunities are there for well-prepared sides to capitalise—just as Coventry have done.
For Robins, the message is clear: sustained growth, smart recruitment, and patience can turn ambition into reality—and Stoke now have a blueprint to follow.
