Celtic exit explained: Main reason why Tom Allison departure could affect the hoops negatively

Celtic F.C. confirmed on Wednesday that long-serving director Tom Allison has stepped down from his role.

Allison had been associated with the club for nearly 25 years, including more than two decades as senior independent director. His departure comes during a period of increased scrutiny around the board, following the earlier exit of Peter Lawwell this season.

He joined Celtic’s board in 2001, shortly after Dermot Desmond strengthened his position as the club’s principal shareholder. Over the years, Allison became a key figure behind the scenes, regularly advising on major decisions.

Outside of football, Allison built a strong reputation in business, founding Peel Sports and holding leadership roles with companies such as Wood Mackenzie energy, Keepmoat Homes and Tulloch Homes Group. He was also recognised in the 2020 New Year Honours with a British Empire Medal for his contributions to business and charity.

A familiar presence in the directors’ box at Celtic Park, Allison played a consistent role in the club’s governance and was regularly reappointed at annual general meetings.

Speaking on his departure, Desmond paid tribute to Allison’s influence, describing him as a trusted advisor whose experience, leadership and vision made a lasting impact on the club—adding that his contribution would be extremely difficult to replace.
