Wrexham denied victory by late Cardiff free-kick as Parkinson questions stoppage time

Wrexham were left frustrated after Cardiff City snatched a 1–1 draw with a stoppage-time equaliser, prompting Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson to question the amount of additional time played by referee Andrew Kitchen.

The visitors appeared to be on course for an important Championship victory after Kieffer Moore’s early goal put Wrexham in front. Parkinson’s side defended their advantage resolutely and looked to have done enough to see out the contest.

However, Kitchen awarded six minutes of added time, a decision that did not sit well with the Wrexham boss. Parkinson believed there should have been closer to four minutes, arguing that the second half had not featured significant delays.

Wrexham’s disappointment deepened when George Dobson fouled Joel Colwill just outside the penalty area. By the time the free-kick was taken, another couple of minutes had passed.

Cardiff made the opportunity count. Rubin Colwill stepped up and delivered a superb strike, sending the ball over the Wrexham defensive wall and beyond goalkeeper Anthony Patterson to level the score dramatically.

Parkinson was particularly unhappy that his team had conceded what he regarded as an avoidable late free-kick after appearing to have the match under control.

The Wrexham manager questioned the referee’s decision to indicate six minutes of stoppage time, insisting that he had expected only around four.

With no significant second-half injury stoppages from Wrexham’s perspective, Parkinson felt his side had done enough to secure the victory before Cardiff’s late intervention changed the outcome.

The result ultimately saw Wrexham surrender two points in heartbreaking circumstances, while Cardiff’s late free-kick rescued a valuable point.
