Why Rangers should move for Jordan Ayew after Lawrence Shankland injury blow

Rangers may need to return to the transfer market after suffering another major blow to their already depleted striker options.

The Gers were dealt a significant setback before the season had properly settled when Youseff Chermiti was ruled out for an extended period with a serious knee injury. That placed increased responsibility on Lawrence Shankland, who had arrived at Ibrox from Hearts during the summer.

Shankland had made an encouraging start, scoring three times across his first five Scottish Premiership appearances for the club.

However, Rangers have now been hit by another injury concern involving their main centre-forward.

According to journalist Chris Jack, Shankland could be sidelined for around three months after suffering a hamstring tear during Rangers’ victory over Motherwell.

Manager Derek McInnes admitted after the match that the injury appeared serious, with the striker potentially facing a lengthy spell out of action and possibly not returning until the end of the year.

That leaves Rangers with a significant problem in attack.

The summer transfer window has already closed, but the club can still look towards the free-agent market if they decide that another striker is necessary.

Rangers should consider Jordan Ayew

With both Chermiti and Shankland unavailable, bringing in an experienced forward on a free transfer could make sense for Rangers.

Jordan Ayew is one player who remains available and could offer McInnes an immediate solution.

The 34-year-old has spent much of his career playing at a high level and has experience across several competitions. He was still contributing for Leicester City last season despite the club’s struggles.

Ayew finished the previous campaign with nine combined goals and assists in the league, while he had also scored five Premier League goals during the season before that.

His international experience is another major attraction. The forward has represented Ghana 122 times, giving him considerable experience of playing under pressure at the highest level.

Ayew would also give McInnes tactical flexibility. Although primarily an attacker, he is capable of operating from either flank, meaning he could provide an alternative option beyond simply filling the centre-forward role.

Rangers now face a difficult period without two of their recognised strikers.

Rather than allowing the loss of Shankland to leave them short in attack, the club could use the free-agent market to add another experienced option.

Ayew’s availability, versatility and extensive experience make him a player Rangers should seriously consider while they wait for their injured forwards to return.
