Who replaces Shankland? Rangers team prediction for St Mirren clash

Rangers head into Wednesday night’s league meeting with St Mirren looking to make it four Scottish Premiership wins in a row before their upcoming Old Firm double-header.

Derek McInnes has seen the pressure ease considerably following three consecutive league victories after Rangers’ difficult start to the campaign. Their narrow 1-0 win over Motherwell last weekend was arguably their most convincing display of the season, although it came at a major cost.

Captain Lawrence Shankland suffered a hamstring injury during the victory and could reportedly be sidelined for as long as four months, leaving McInnes with a major decision to make over his replacement.

St Mirren arrive at Ibrox in confident mood after Craig McLeish was named August’s Manager of the Month. The Paisley club currently sit above Rangers in the league, although their most recent trip to Ibrox ended badly, with the Buddies suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat in the Premier Sports Cup.

With Shankland unavailable, McInnes could opt for a 4-3-3 formation.

GK – Ivor Pandur

Pandur produced another clean-sheet performance against Motherwell and continues to look increasingly comfortable as Rangers’ first-choice goalkeeper. There appears to be little reason to change between the posts.

RB – Dujon Sterling

Having returned from injury, Sterling has an opportunity to cement his place in the side. Ross McCrorie and Kosta Nedeljkovic are waiting for their chances, while St Mirren winger Ismael Kabia will provide a serious test on the flank.

CB – Emmanuel Fernandez

Fernandez looked much closer to his best against Motherwell. He was composed, disciplined and avoided the lapses that had previously caused concern. Another solid showing would further strengthen his case.

CB – Olwethu Makhanya

Makhanya has arguably been one of Rangers’ most impressive summer arrivals. His strength, speed and ability to remain comfortable in possession have added something different to the defence.

LB – James Penrice

With Tuur Rommens unavailable, Penrice remains the obvious choice at left-back. His attacking contribution has been encouraging, but his defensive work could be tested against St Mirren.

CM – Dan Neil

Neil appeared to turn a corner against Motherwell after coming under criticism earlier in the campaign. Having been left out of the squad against Falkirk, his response last weekend was encouraging.

CM – Nico Raskin

With the transfer window now closed, Rangers will need Raskin to deliver consistently. McInnes will have to find a way to get the best possible performances from the Belgian midfielder.

AM – Kim Min-su

His poor penalty against Motherwell may see him lose responsibility from the spot, but there is still plenty to like about his contribution from open play. He remains an exciting option in the attacking midfield role.

RW – Findlay Curtis

Curtis has started Rangers’ last three matches and is gradually establishing himself on the right side. His performances have been steady, but the Scotland international now needs to add more goals and assists to his game.

LW – Djeidi Gassama

Gassama’s biggest challenge has always been consistency. However, when he finds his rhythm, he can be one of Rangers’ biggest attacking threats, making it important for McInnes to keep him involved while his confidence is high.

ST – Ryan Naderi

Naderi could get the nod to lead the line following Shankland’s injury. Although Kevin Kelsy may eventually become the long-term solution alongside Youssef Chermiti, Naderi’s goal against Motherwell and his physical presence could make him the better option against a strong St Mirren defence.
