Chris Sutton has once again had his say on Rangers ahead of Sunday’s Old Firm clash at Celtic Park.

The Gers head into the second derby of the week in excellent form, with Derek McInnes’ side having won their last five matches.

Rangers’ most impressive result during that run came in the Scottish League Cup, when they swept Celtic aside 3-0 at Ibrox. Dan Neil struck twice, while Kevin Kelsy also found the net as McInnes’ team produced a commanding display.

Celtic have since suffered another blow, going down 3-1 to LASK in Europe, leaving Martin O’Neill’s side looking to respond when the teams meet again in the Premiership.

Sutton has been assessing Rangers’ recent improvement before the latest instalment of the Old Firm rivalry.

McInnes endured a difficult beginning to his Rangers reign, with the club failing to progress through their European qualifying campaigns.

However, results have improved considerably in recent weeks, culminating in the emphatic victory over Celtic.

Writing for the Daily Record, Sutton was highly critical of Celtic’s performance in that match, describing O’Neill’s side as “atrocious” while highlighting how Rangers dominated the midfield battle.

Despite that, Sutton suggested there is still a question mark over just how strong he believes McInnes’ Rangers team actually are.

He wrote: “The odd thing is, I don’t think Derek’s team are wonderful.

“But last weekend, Rangers were way too powerful, too smart and too good for Martin’s side.”

Rangers have a major opportunity

Sutton’s comments could be viewed as praise for Rangers’ performance while still stopping short of suggesting McInnes has built an outstanding team.

Whatever the former Celtic striker’s assessment, Rangers now have a significant opportunity in Sunday’s derby.

Celtic remain five points clear at the top of the Premiership despite their recent setbacks, meaning Rangers have ground to make up.

A second Rangers victory over Celtic in the space of a week would cut that deficit to just two points and significantly change the early-season picture.

McInnes’ team therefore have the chance to turn their recent momentum into a serious challenge at the top of the table, with another victory at Celtic Park potentially making the title race considerably tighter before September has even ended.
