Strong contender moves closer to becoming West Brom’s next manager

West Brom have been urged to consider handing James Morrison the permanent manager’s role once the Championship season concludes, following his impressive interim spell in charge.

The 39-year-old stepped in after Eric Ramsay departed, tasked with guiding the Baggies away from a relegation scrap. Since taking over, Morrison has overseen six matches, losing just once, and has helped open up a four-point cushion over Leicester City in the bottom three.

Former assistant boss Mick Brown believes the club would benefit from maintaining stability by sticking with Morrison. His impact has drawn praise, and although the team remain near the lower end of the table, there is growing optimism around their form.

There had been suggestions previously that Morrison was an outside candidate for the role, with names like Darren Mooreand Slaven Bilić linked. However, a 2-2 draw with promotion-chasing Wrexham on Good Friday, along with victories over Bristol City and Hull City, has strengthened his case.

Brown highlighted the importance of continuity, pointing out that frequent managerial changes often fail to deliver results. He praised Morrison for improving performances, building a strong connection with the squad, and steering the team away from danger. According to him, replacing Morrison at the end of the season would be a risk given the progress already made.

Despite Morrison’s strong case, West Brom are still assessing other options. One name under consideration is Gerhard Struber, who recently left Bristol City. With previous attempts involving less experienced coaches such as Ramsay and Ryan Mason failing to deliver consistent results, the club may now lean towards a more experienced appointment.

If Morrison continues his positive run and lifts the team further up the table, his chances of securing the job permanently could become increasingly difficult to overlook.
