Steven Gerrard reportedly held Rangers talks over replacing Danny Röhl
Steven Gerrard would reportedly have been open to discussions with Rangers F.C. over a potential return to Ibrox had the club decided to part ways with current head coach Danny Röhl ahead of next season.
According to Scottish broadcaster Darrell Currie, the former Rangers boss had made himself available and remained a genuine option for the Ibrox hierarchy as uncertainty surrounded Röhl’s future following a disappointing end to the campaign.

Gerrard has regularly been linked with a return to Glasgow since leaving the club in 2021, having previously emerged as a managerial candidate last summer and again following the departure of Russell Martin. His name continues to carry weight among supporters due to the success he delivered during his first spell in charge.
Despite reportedly having the opportunity to revisit a reunion with the former Liverpool captain, Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh and the club’s ownership group appear to have instead placed their trust in Röhl, signalling their intention to back the German coach going into the 2026/27 campaign.
Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club on 18 May, Currie claimed Gerrard would likely have entered discussions with Rangers if approached, suggesting the former England international was available and interested in the role.
“Cavenagh had a massive decision to make,” Currie explained. “You’ve got guys like Gerrard out there. He’s the guy they wanted for the job the first time. It’s my understanding that he would’ve talked to Rangers again. He’s available now. They could’ve gone to get him. They’ve stuck with Röhl. That’s a monumental decision, isn’t it?”
Gerrard remains a hugely respected figure at Ibrox after guiding Rangers to the famous “55” league title, ending Celtic’s dominance and bringing an end to the club’s decade-long wait for Premiership success. Although his exit to Aston Villa in 2021 divided opinion, his achievements in Glasgow ensured his place in Rangers folklore.
The contrast in managerial experience became a major talking point during this season’s title race, particularly as Martin O’Neill steered Celtic to another successful campaign. While Röhl struggled to halt Rangers’ post-split collapse, Celtic surged strongly under experienced leadership, with O’Neill overseeing a decisive winning run.
Rangers’ poor finish to the season, including four consecutive defeats after the split, intensified pressure on Röhl and sparked growing frustration among sections of the fanbase. Questions have been raised over tactical decisions, team selection, and the handling of senior players, including captain James Tavernier, whose situation reportedly caused concern among supporters.
Even with public backing from the board, Röhl is expected to head into next season under significant pressure. Rangers’ hierarchy have committed to supporting him in the transfer market, but expectations remain high at Ibrox, and any early setbacks could quickly reignite debate around whether the club made the right call by overlooking a reunion with Gerrard.
