Southampton’s next boss? Three managers Saints must consider if Eckert departs

Southampton F.C. are already beginning to plan for life after a chaotic end to the season following their expulsion from the Championship play-offs over the club’s spying scandal involving Middlesbrough.

Despite defeating Middlesbrough F.C. across two legs in the semi-finals, Southampton were removed from the promotion race after an independent disciplinary panel ruled the punishment was justified. The club’s subsequent appeal was also unsuccessful, meaning the Saints will remain in the Championship next season and begin the 2026/27 campaign with a four-point deduction.

The fallout has placed increasing pressure on manager Tonda Eckert, who accepted responsibility for the controversy after allegations of spying surfaced. Questions over his long-term future at St Mary’s continue to grow, while reports suggest a separate FA investigation could potentially lead to disciplinary action or even a football ban.

With uncertainty surrounding Eckert’s position, Southampton may soon be forced to explore replacement options ahead of what promises to be a hugely important campaign. Here are three managers the club could consider if a change is made.

Ralph Hasenhüttl

One option could involve a familiar face returning to St Mary’s. Southampton supporters remain frustrated by recent events, and after the club publicly promised accountability, appointing someone with a previous connection could help rebuild trust.

Hasenhüttl spent almost four years in charge between 2018 and 2022, overseeing a far more stable Premier League period for the club. While there were difficult moments, the Austrian is still widely respected for the job he did under challenging circumstances.

Currently unattached following his departure from Wolfsburg, a return to Southampton may appeal to a coach who still holds strong ties to the club and could provide stability during a difficult period.

Scott Parker

Another serious contender could be Scott Parker, particularly given Southampton’s likely ambition of securing an immediate return to the Premier League.

Although squad changes are expected this summer, Southampton should still possess one of the stronger Championship squads, aided by parachute payments and financial strength.

Parker also arrives with a proven track record in the division, having previously guided clubs including Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley to promotion, making him an obvious candidate if Southampton prioritise experience and short-term success.

Russell Martin

A more adventurous appointment could involve Russell Martin, whose possession-based philosophy has previously drawn praise despite mixed results.

Martin knows the demands of Championship football well and could be viewed as someone capable of rebuilding Southampton’s identity after the reputational damage caused by the Spygate controversy.

While his style may divide opinion, Southampton may decide that a long-term rebuild requires a coach capable of restoring belief and structure both on and off the pitch.
