Southampton spygate scandal deepens after alleged Tonda Eckert WhatsApp messages are uncovered
Southampton F.C. are facing one of the most serious crises in their recent history after being expelled from the EFL Championship play-off final following a disciplinary ruling linked to allegations of spying on multiple opposition teams during the season.
The controversy first came to light when Middlesbrough F.C. accused Southampton of filming and photographing their pre-match training sessions ahead of the first leg of their play-off semi-final. That allegation triggered a wider investigation into the club’s conduct in the build-up to key fixtures.

According to reports, the situation escalated significantly during the disciplinary hearing, with WhatsApp messages linked to manager Tonda Eckert reportedly uncovered as part of the evidence presented. The messages are believed to have weakened Southampton’s defence as they attempted to avoid punishment, with officials viewing them as damaging to the club’s case.
Southampton are understood to have admitted to at least three separate incidents of spying on rival clubs, including Middlesbrough, as part of their preparations for important matches. Additional testimony reportedly came from two analysts who claimed they were pressured into participating in scouting trips connected to the allegations, further intensifying scrutiny on the club’s internal operations.
Following an independent commission hearing, the decision was made to expel Southampton from the play-off final and reinstate Middlesbrough in their place. The ruling also included a four-point deduction for the following season, adding further long-term consequences for the Hampshire club. Despite initially winning their semi-final 2-1 on aggregate and securing what should have been a place at Wembley to face Hull City A.F.C., that result has now been overturned.
The fallout is expected to extend beyond the pitch. Reports suggest Eckert may now face a separate investigation from the Football Association over potential misconduct, which could result in a ban from football if he is found to have brought the game into disrepute.
There is also growing concern among players, who are reportedly exploring legal options due to potential financial losses linked to the expulsion. Some members of the squad are believed to have contacted the Professional Footballers’ Association for guidance, as uncertainty continues to surround the club’s position.
Southampton are expected to appeal the decision in the hope of having the punishment overturned. However, as things stand, Middlesbrough have been reinstated into the final, where they will face Hull City, while Southampton’s immediate future remains clouded by uncertainty both on and off the pitch.
