Southampton handed Spygate verdict as coach receives six-week suspended ban
Southampton coach Tonda Eckert has been fined £28,000 and handed a suspended six-week ban for his involvement in the club’s Spygate scandal.
Eckert was charged by the English Football Association over three separate incidents after Southampton admitted to illegally gathering information on opposition teams during their promotion push last season.
The coach accepted the charges, with the FA confirming on Wednesday that he had been formally reprimanded and fined.
His six-week suspension has been suspended until the end of next season, meaning he will avoid an immediate touchline ban provided he does not commit another offence during that period.
Southampton’s Spygate scandal explained
The controversy centred on Southampton’s unauthorised filming of Middlesbrough training sessions before their Championship play-off semi-final.
Southampton went on to defeat Middlesbrough over two legs and booked their place in the play-off final, putting them just one victory away from returning to the Premier League.
However, the situation quickly unravelled when Southampton admitted that the spying operation had extended beyond Middlesbrough.
Oxford United and Ipswich Town were also among the clubs Southampton had gathered information on earlier in the season.
The EFL subsequently took action, removing Southampton from the play-off final and reinstating Middlesbrough in their place.
The club was also hit with a four-point deduction to be served during the following season.
Middlesbrough ultimately failed to take advantage of their reinstatement, losing the final 1-0 to Hull City and missing out on promotion.
Eckert avoids immediate suspension
While Southampton have already suffered significant consequences from the scandal, Eckert has now received his individual punishment.
The £28,000 fine represents a substantial penalty, although the suspended nature of his six-week ban means he can continue his coaching duties for Southampton.
His suspension will remain hanging over him until the conclusion of next season.
The FA’s decision brings another chapter of the Spygate saga to a close, although Southampton will still have to deal with the sporting consequences of their four-point deduction.
