Social media statement from Motherwell follows heated Celtic penalty decision debate
The controversy from Wednesday night’s chaotic clash between Celtic F.C. and Motherwell F.C. is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
From Celtic’s point of view, the late penalty decision will continue to hang over the result, even if officials believe the handball call was correct. Instead, the incident has sparked widespread debate across football, with many questioning whether referee John Beaton and VAR made the right judgment in awarding the spot-kick at Fir Park.

That backlash has prompted Motherwell to issue a strongly worded social media statement, calling for attention to shift towards their final fixture of the season, as they feel the wider game has been unfairly criticised following the incident.
The match carried major consequences not only for Celtic’s title challenge heading into their decisive clash with Hearts, but also for Motherwell’s hopes of finishing in fourth place in the Scottish Premiership.
Elsewhere on the night, Hibernian’s win over Rangers added further tension to the league picture, tightening the race for position going into the final round.
Motherwell later posted a six-minute video highlighting the key moments of the match, including the late penalty incident, titled “Catching the attention of the world// Motherwell 2-3 Celtic.”
The clip also included an earlier incident involving Daizen Maeda and the Motherwell goalkeeper, which has largely gone under-discussed compared to the late drama.
Motherwell’s message online urged perspective, stating that amid widespread criticism of the game, they must “draw a line in the sand” and focus on finishing the season strongly.
