Sheffield United rethink Gus Hamer replacement as Chris Wilder reveals transfer strategy

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has admitted the club are unlikely to spend heavily on a direct replacement for Gus Hamer, with the Blades instead considering a different approach to reshaping their attack.

Hamer officially completed his return to Coventry City, leaving Sheffield United with a significant creative void to fill. The midfielder was entering the final year of his contract and had shown little interest in extending his stay, leaving the Blades with limited options.

With Sheffield United expected to receive around £6 million, finding another player capable of producing the same match-winning influence for a similar fee would be extremely difficult. Wilder therefore believes the club may be better served by changing the structure of the attack rather than attempting to find another player with exactly the same characteristics.

Wilder unlikely to spend big on Hamer replacement

The Sheffield United boss acknowledged that replacing Hamer with a comparable player would require a significant investment, something the club does not appear prepared to make.

Instead, Wilder has identified the loan market as a potential solution. The wages previously allocated to Hamer, combined with the money generated by his departure, could allow United to bring in a quality temporary signing without committing to a long-term deal.

Wilder remains confident that the Blades can find someone capable of improving the team.

The focus could now shift towards adding a genuine wide player, an area Sheffield United had already identified as a priority earlier in the transfer window.

Hamer spent much of his time on the left side for United over the last two seasons, although he regularly moved into different areas of the pitch. Despite his versatility, Wilder never viewed him as a conventional No.10 or traditional central midfielder.

O’Hare could take on greater creative responsibility

With Hamer gone, more responsibility could fall on Callum O’Hare.

The midfielder enjoyed a productive campaign last season, scoring nine times, and he has already opened his account this term after finding the net during Sheffield United’s 3-0 EFL Cup victory over Mansfield Town.

O’Hare started from the left in the role Hamer had occupied regularly, but a new winger could allow him to move back into the No.10 position where he is arguably more comfortable.

There is also a belief that O’Hare produced some of his strongest performances last season when Hamer was unavailable, giving him greater freedom to influence matches.

Blades searching for an exciting winger

Rather than simply replacing Hamer’s numbers, Wilder appears keen to introduce more natural width into his team.

The manager suggested Sheffield United are looking for a traditional winger who can attack defenders, provide excitement and create opportunities from the flank.

The Blades already have options on the right through Tahith Chong and Romelle Donovan, so attention is now turning towards strengthening the opposite side.

Wilder knows replacing a player of Hamer’s importance will be difficult, but he remains confident that the club can find a solution before the transfer window closes on September 1.

The strategy, therefore, may not be about finding another Gus Hamer. Instead, Sheffield United could use his departure as an opportunity to build a more balanced and dynamic attacking unit.
