Referee’s private message to Tomas Soucek after West Ham vs QPR controversy revealed
West Ham controversy deepens as Tomas Soucek reveals referee’s stunning admission after QPR draw
West Ham United have been left frustrated after Tomas Soucek revealed that referee Ruebyn Ricardo admitted he had made the wrong decision over QPR’s penalty during Friday night’s 1-1 draw.
The Hammers were left chasing the game after Nicolas Madsen converted from the spot in the 18th minute, following Ricardo’s decision to award QPR a penalty for Soucek’s challenge on Paul Smyth.
However, replays appeared to show that Soucek reached the ball first and that the contact occurred outside the penalty area, leaving West Ham players and supporters questioning the decision.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side eventually found a way back into the contest when Jarrod Bowen equalised in the 70th minute, giving the hosts hope of turning the game around.
West Ham then had a golden opportunity to snatch all three points in stoppage time, but Bowen saw his penalty saved by Pierce Charles. The Hammers consequently had to settle for a frustrating draw.
Yet the biggest talking point emerged after the final whistle, when Soucek disclosed what Ricardo had told him following the controversial first-half decision.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, the West Ham midfielder claimed the referee acknowledged his mistake after the game, despite refusing to engage with him during the contest.
“After the game [Ricardo] told me he was wrong, but in the game he just didn’t want to speak with me anymore,” Soucek said.

The revelation is likely to intensify West Ham’s frustration, particularly given how the penalty decision shaped the match and forced them to fight their way back from behind.
The result also extends the Hammers’ winless run to three matches in all competitions, following their Carabao Cup defeat to Fulham.
For Espirito Santo and his players, the immediate disappointment will be the missed opportunity to secure a much-needed victory. Bowen’s late penalty miss only added to the frustration after West Ham had worked hard to get back on level terms.
Ricardo, who began refereeing after encouragement from his school PE teacher in 2013, made history in April 2023 when he became the youngest Black referee to officiate an EFL fixture, aged 25.
However, his decision to award QPR’s penalty and Soucek’s subsequent account of their post-match conversation have now placed the official at the centre of a major talking point.
West Ham will be eager to move forward from the controversy, but Soucek’s revelation has given supporters another reason to question how the crucial decision was handled.
