Rangers handed update on potential Vaclav Cerny return

Rangers are reportedly growing doubtful about their chances of bringing former favourite Vaclav Cerny back to Ibrox before the summer transfer window closes.

The Czech winger has been linked with a return to Rangers throughout the summer after enjoying a hugely successful loan spell during the 2024/25 campaign. However, a deal is becoming increasingly difficult to complete, with Besiktas not actively looking to sell the player.

Cerny is also understood to be settled at the Turkish club, while his lucrative contract would make any potential transfer a significant financial commitment for Rangers.

Sources claim the Ibrox club view a deal for the 28-year-old as both “big” and a “big stretch” financially. Rangers remain open to exploring the possibility of signing him before the deadline, but their chances of making the move happen appear to be diminishing.

Cerny has also started the new season well with Besiktas, registering two goals and an assist across his opening seven appearances.

Cerny return would be popular with Rangers fans

Cerny became a major favourite among Rangers supporters during his loan spell in 2024/25, producing 18 goals and nine assists in all competitions.

A permanent return to Glasgow would therefore be warmly welcomed by the Rangers support, but the financial implications could make the move difficult.

Derek McInnes is still hoping to strengthen his squad before the September 3 deadline, and committing significant funds to Cerny could restrict Rangers’ ability to complete other deals.

The club have reportedly held discussions with Besiktas regarding the winger, although there has been little progress since their initial interest earlier in the summer.

Rangers also targeting Kevin Kelsy

Rangers are also pushing to strengthen their attack and have identified Portland Timbers striker Kevin Kelsy as a key target.

The Gers are keen to add another forward following Youssef Chermiti’s injury and are understood to be preparing to accelerate their pursuit of the Venezuelan striker.

Kelsy has impressed in MLS this season, scoring nine goals and providing two assists in 20 league appearances.

With the transfer deadline approaching, Rangers face a race against time to complete their preferred attacking additions, while a potential Cerny deal remains a financially difficult proposition.
