Rangers F.C. receive fresh red card ruling as Scottish Football Association set VAR standard for title run-in
Rangers F.C. defender Jayden Meghoma avoided a red card during the win over Falkirk F.C. following a VAR review.
Former referee Steven Conroy believes the decision was incorrect, arguing that Meghoma should have been sent off—mainly due to what he described as inconsistent and “farcical” VAR standards in Scotland.
The incident occurred as Calvin Miller launched a counter-attack, appearing to have a clear path toward goal before being brought down by Meghoma. Despite the presence of defenders James Tavernier and Nicolas Raskin, referee Don Robertson issued only a yellow card—a decision supported by VAR official Andrew Dallas.

Conroy, however, pointed to a recent incident involving Heart of Midlothian F.C. midfielder Marc Leonard, who was sent off for a similar foul on Robbie Muirhead. That decision, made by referee Kevin Clancy with VAR involvement, has set what Conroy sees as a new benchmark for DOGSO rulings.
Speaking on The Ref’s View podcast, Conroy criticised the Scottish Football Association, warning that inconsistent interpretations of the rule could impact the title race run-in.
