Rangers: 49ers-backed owners make strongest statement so far as Lawrence Shankland deal nears completion
Rangers are reportedly closing in on the signing of Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland, with his expected arrival being seen as the clearest sign yet of ambition from the club’s 49ers-backed leadership.
Although the 30-year-old is set to join on a free transfer, the move carries major significance. Shankland came close to guiding Hearts to a historic Scottish Premiership title before they were ultimately beaten by Celtic on the final day, with the Jambos still managing to secure European football after an impressive campaign.

Given his importance to Hearts and their strong season under Derek McInnes, his departure would have once seemed unlikely. However, Rangers have put forward a proposal that has reportedly even cut short the striker’s holiday, with club officials now being credited for pushing the deal forward.
Shankland is expected to become a Rangers player barring any late complications, ending years of near misses with a move to Ibrox. The Hearts skipper would arrive still performing at a high level, bringing leadership and proven goalscoring ability—qualities seen as a strong fit for Danny Röhl’s squad rebuild.
His exit could also trigger wider changes at Hearts, who had aimed to challenge again for the title next season but may now risk losing further key players following an impressive year. Rangers, meanwhile, are hoping his signing could set the tone for a busy transfer window and help them close the gap on Celtic.
Alongside Shankland, Rangers are also being linked with targets such as Elliott Watt of Motherwell and Luke Graham of Dundee, with belief growing that momentum is building under Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers’ influence.
Reaction to the developing deal has been strong across Scottish football, with pundits and fans weighing in on social media. The Rangers Review’s Blair Malloy described it as “the most sensible and perhaps one of the most exciting signings” the club have made in recent years.
