Martin O’Neill responds to Saudi transfer links for Callum McGregor
Martin O’Neill has urged Celtic F.C. to do everything possible to retain captain Callum McGregor amid reported interest from Saudi Arabia.
Speculation has grown following the move of former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers to the Saudi league, where he has quickly made an impact. His success has fuelled suggestions he could look to reunite with McGregor.

However, O’Neill has made it clear he is not in favour of such a move, insisting the club should prioritise keeping their skipper. He highlighted McGregor’s importance both on and off the pitch, describing him as a key leader who drives standards within the team.
The former manager also pointed to McGregor’s loyalty, noting that he has previously had opportunities to leave for more lucrative offers but chose to remain at Celtic. For O’Neill, that commitment, combined with his consistent performances, makes him invaluable to the squad.
He further stressed that McGregor’s influence in the dressing room and his ability on the pitch make him a player any manager would want to keep, especially during a period of transition.
With Celtic expected to undergo significant changes this summer, including the appointment of a new manager, McGregor’s future could become a key decision. Nevertheless, his experience and leadership may prove crucial as the club looks to rebuild and compete at the highest level.
