Lewis Ferguson Breaks Silence on Rangers Return as Latest Stance Emerges

on

Lewis Ferguson is reportedly planning to remain at Bologna for the rest of the season despite continued speculation linking him with a return to Scotland and Rangers.

The midfielder was heavily associated with a potential Ibrox switch during the summer transfer window as Derek McInnes looked to reshape his squad.

Ferguson is a lifelong Rangers supporter and has never hidden his desire to represent the club one day. However, the Scotland international recently admitted that he never believed a move to Ibrox was particularly close before the current campaign began.

That has not stopped Rangers from maintaining an interest in the 27-year-old, with the club expected to revisit the possibility of signing him in 2027.

For now, though, a January transfer appears unlikely.

Ferguson is reportedly settled in Italy and remains an important figure at Bologna, where he is also the club captain. His current contract runs until 2028, meaning the Italian side are under no immediate pressure to sell.

Ferguson happy to remain in Italy

Ferguson’s performances have continued to make him an important part of Bologna’s plans, and his regular involvement underlines his standing at the club.

The Scotland midfielder has reportedly made it clear that he has no pressing desire to leave during the season.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, the latest situation was explained:

“Lewis Ferguson’s doing really well for Bologna. He’s club captain and he’s playing every game as well, so that shows how highly rated he is by the Italian club.

“I think Ferguson’s happy with life in Italy, so he’s not in any rush to leave them.

“I think it’s one that will just always be on the agenda because of his links with Rangers, but the player is happy with Bologna and Bologna are very happy with him.”

Ferguson has previously refused to completely rule out joining Rangers in the future, meaning the door remains open to the possibility of fulfilling his boyhood ambition.

However, Gers supporters may have to wait until next summer at the earliest before that opportunity becomes realistic.

Raskin stance could also affect Rangers plans

The situation surrounding Nicolas Raskin could also have implications for Rangers’ pursuit of Ferguson.

The Belgian midfielder attracted interest from clubs in both the Premier League and Saudi Arabia during the summer, but ultimately remained at Ibrox.

There had been suggestions that an understanding existed between Raskin and the Rangers hierarchy which would allow him to depart in January if a suitable offer arrived.

However, his position is now understood to have changed.

Raskin is reportedly keen to stay with Rangers until the end of the season as Derek McInnes’ side chase domestic success.

That could potentially push any major midfield reshuffle into the summer, when Rangers could once again explore the possibility of bringing Ferguson back to Scotland.

With Ferguson under contract at Bologna until 2028, negotiations would still be required, but his continued connection to Rangers means the midfielder is likely to remain on the club’s radar.
