Celtic’s search for a permanent manager continues to gather pace, with fresh reports suggesting Robbie Keane has emerged as a serious contender while Martin O’Neill’s future role at the club remains uncertain.

According to Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph, Celtic have held positive discussions with former striker Robbie Keane regarding the managerial vacancy, with additional talks expected to take place later this week.

Despite it being nearly five months since Wilfried Nancy departed, uncertainty still surrounds who will lead the Hoops into next season. Time is beginning to tighten, with the Scottish Premiership campaign set to begin on August 1/2 and crucial Champions League play-off fixtures scheduled later that month.

Supporters are already anticipating a major squad rebuild over the summer, with significant turnover expected. Several players are likely to leave, while a number of first-team additions are anticipated as Celtic prepare for another demanding campaign domestically and in Europe.

Alongside the managerial uncertainty, questions also remain over Martin O’Neill’s long-term involvement at the club. Principal shareholder Dermot Desmond is reportedly due to speak with the interim boss to determine whether he wants to remain in charge permanently or continue in another role.

Sky Sports understands Celtic would be willing to discuss a short-term managerial agreement if O’Neill wishes to stay in the dugout. However, should he decide against taking the role full-time, discussions are expected to shift toward a possible advisory, consultancy or football operations position.

Keane, who recently left Hungarian side Ferencváros, is believed to already have plans for his coaching staff should he be appointed. Reports suggest he would like to bring in Stephen Glass, Scott Brown and Jonny Hayes as part of his backroom team.

Another name still under consideration is Wales manager Craig Bellamy. Although Bellamy recently reiterated his commitment to the Welsh national side, Celtic are still expected to explore whether a move could be possible.

Interestingly, O’Neill and Keane share a long-standing working relationship from their time together with the Republic of Ireland setup, where the pair served as manager and captain. Whether that dynamic could influence Celtic’s thinking remains unclear.

Questions have also been raised about what role would best suit O’Neill moving forward. Since retiring as a player, the veteran coach has only ever worked as a manager and has no previous experience in sporting director or advisory positions.

Meanwhile, Keane’s candidacy continues to divide opinion. While he boasts title-winning experience in Israel and Hungary, he has never managed in British football, and his direct Celtic connection comes only from a brief loan spell during his playing career.

With Bellamy still a possible target and talks ongoing elsewhere, Celtic’s search for a new manager may yet continue into next week as the club looks to make one of its most important appointments in recent years.
