Latest from France as Abdoulaye Kante’s Middlesbrough future comes into focus
Abdoulaye Kante could still have a future at Middlesbrough F.C., but fresh reports from France suggest AS Saint-Étienneremain interested in bringing him back this summer.
The 20-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan in France after struggling for regular minutes following his move from ES Troyes AC. His temporary switch included an option to buy, but that deal was heavily dependent on Saint-Étienne securing promotion — something they failed to achieve after falling short in the play-offs.

With the option now expired, Kante is due back at Middlesbrough and could be given the chance to impress new boss Kim Hellberg during pre-season.
However, reports in France claim Saint-Étienne have not completely ruled out making another move, especially after Kante made a strong impression during his spell, featuring 16 times and becoming a regular in the side.
Injuries disrupted his early months at Middlesbrough, limiting his opportunities before his January departure. Since then, the club has undergone changes in style and management, which could open a fresh path for him.
With midfield options reduced following the exit of Hayden Hackney and the end of Alan Browne’s stay, Kante may now have a stronger chance to fight for his place back on Teesside.
