Kalvin Phillips to Sheffield United? Sydie Peck comments add weight to rumours

Sheffield United’s interest in bringing Kalvin Phillips back to Bramall Lane this summer is beginning to make even more sense — and Sydie Peck’s own comments may explain exactly why.

The Blades are believed to be exploring a second move for the Manchester City midfielder after his injury-hit loan spell during the second half of last season. Despite making only three appearances, Phillips clearly left a strong impression behind the scenes, with Chris Wilder reportedly keen to reunite with the England international.

United supporters were surprised earlier this month when the club confirmed Jaïro Riedewald would depart following the expiration of his contract, especially after an impressive campaign in South Yorkshire. However, the decision is believed to be linked to Wilder’s desire to create room in both the wage bill and midfield squad for a renewed attempt to sign Phillips.

Although injuries prevented Phillips from making a major impact on the pitch, his influence away from matchdays appears to have been significant. Coaching staff and younger players are understood to have benefitted from his experience, professionalism and top-level knowledge during his short spell at the club.

That influence may be exactly what Wilder wants to preserve heading into next season.

Young midfielder Sydie Peck has already spoken openly about the importance of learning from experienced teammates, admitting earlier this year that competition for places and senior figures around him are vital for his development.

Peck explained that he embraces competition and values the opportunity to work alongside players who have performed at the highest level, while also believing younger players can contribute to the group in different ways.

Those comments only strengthen the case for Phillips’ return.

With Joe Rothwell, Peck and Oliver Arblaster currently among the main senior midfield options available, Sheffield United are expected to recruit in the middle of the park this summer. Wilder will want greater depth and quality if the Blades are to challenge strongly next season.

If Phillips can stay fit, United would be adding a player with Premier League pedigree and Championship quality to their ranks. More importantly, his arrival could accelerate the development of talents such as Peck and Arblaster, while raising standards across the squad.

For Wilder, signing Phillips may not just be about improving the starting XI — it could also be about shaping the next generation at Bramall Lane.
