John Eustace reacts as Derby County handed injury setback before Cardiff City clash

Derby County have suffered a major setback with defender Derry Murkin expected to spend up to four months on the sidelines after sustaining a hamstring injury.

Head coach John Eustace confirmed the news after Murkin was forced to withdraw from Derby’s Under-21 fixture against Hull City last Friday. The left-back had been included in the starting line-up but reportedly picked up the problem during the warm-up.

The match was intended to help Murkin regain his fitness and sharpness after he missed the closing stages of last season following a minor back operation. Instead, he now faces another lengthy spell away from competitive action.

The injury is particularly frustrating for Murkin after he impressed during his first months at Derby following his £1.7 million move from the Netherlands. Eustace admitted the setback is a huge disappointment for both the player and the club.

Eustace said the immediate priority is ensuring Murkin remains in a positive frame of mind during his recovery. The defender had been hoping to build on his encouraging start and establish himself further this season.

The Derby boss also highlighted the importance of providing the player with the right support, particularly as Murkin has moved from another country and is currently living away from home.

Eustace believes Derby’s medical and coaching staff can create the right environment for Murkin to recover properly, while the defender can continue contributing to the squad away from the pitch.

Despite the difficult setback, Eustace is confident Murkin will eventually return stronger and continue developing during his time at the club.
