James Ward-Prowse makes feelings clear after Southampton’s win against West Ham
Southampton’s 3-2 victory over West Ham United on Saturday was a significant result in their Championship promotion push, but for James Ward-Prowse, the three points carried an extra layer of satisfaction.
The midfielder has made an impressive return to St Mary’s after spending three years away with West Ham. Having come through Southampton’s academy, the 31-year-old has quickly re-established himself as an important member of Tonda Eckert’s squad following a frustrating spell in London.

Ward-Prowse’s final years at West Ham were far from straightforward. After struggling to secure regular opportunities during a loan spell at Nottingham Forest under Nuno Espírito Santo, he returned to the Hammers, only for the Portuguese coach to take charge at the London Stadium less than two months into the following season.
Ward-Prowse initially featured in Graham Potter’s first five Premier League matches in charge but subsequently disappeared from the club’s matchday squads until January. He was eventually sent on loan to Burnley for the remainder of the campaign.
Ward-Prowse admits Southampton’s West Ham victory felt special
The midfielder was once again deemed surplus to requirements by West Ham during the summer transfer window, paving the way for his return to Southampton, where he has enjoyed a fresh start.
The Saints continued their encouraging Championship run with a third victory in four league matches, overcoming West Ham away from home. The result strengthened their promotion ambitions, and without their four-point deduction, they would have climbed to second in the table.
Ward-Prowse played an important role in the victory, completing 87 per cent of his passes, including seven into the final third. He also recorded 10 defensive contributions, highlighting his influence at both ends of the pitch.
Following the final whistle, former Watford striker Troy Deeney asked the Southampton midfielder about the added satisfaction of beating his former club, particularly after Nuno had previously decided he was not part of his plans.
Ward-Prowse maintained his usual professional approach but could not completely conceal his amusement at the question.
“Yeah, I’m not going to lie, of course it does,” he admitted.
He went on to explain that his main priority was to perform well individually and contribute to the team’s overall display before describing the result as a fantastic victory.
West Ham supporters praise Ward-Prowse’s professionalism
Ward-Prowse’s response also prompted reactions from West Ham supporters, with several expressing sympathy for the way his time at the London Stadium unfolded.
One supporter praised his professionalism, arguing that he deserved better treatment from the club and its previous managers while wishing him well at Southampton.
Another fan similarly applauded the midfielder for maintaining his composure throughout a difficult period, criticising Nuno’s management of the situation.
For Ward-Prowse, his return to Southampton appears to have provided an opportunity to rebuild his confidence, enjoy regular football again and play a meaningful role in the club’s push for promotion.
