‘Imminent’ Lewis Ferguson update as Rangers transfer talk gathers pace
Lewis Ferguson Rangers transfer latest as Bologna stance emerges
Lewis Ferguson is unlikely to make a move to Rangers during the January transfer window, with Bologna understood to have no intention of allowing the midfielder to leave midway through the season.
The Scotland international has been repeatedly linked with a return to his boyhood club over the past 18 months after establishing himself as an important player in Serie A.
Ferguson has never hidden his affection for Rangers and has previously admitted that playing for the Ibrox side remains something he would like to experience during his career.
That has fuelled regular speculation around a potential return to Scotland, particularly during the summer transfer window.
However, a deal failed to materialise, with Ferguson later confirming that although Rangers had shown interest, negotiations never reached the point of an agreement.
The latest information suggests a January move would also prove difficult.
Ferguson has regained his regular starting role at Bologna this season after finding playing time harder to come by towards the end of the previous campaign.
His importance to the Italian club means Rangers would face a significant challenge if they attempted to prise him away during the season.
Rangers face another Ferguson setback
Rangers previously had the opportunity to sign Ferguson while he was still at Aberdeen but ultimately missed out before the midfielder moved to Bologna in 2022.
Since arriving in Italy, Ferguson has become a key figure for the Serie A side.
He has made 140 appearances for Bologna and captained them to their first major trophy in more than five decades when they lifted the Coppa Italia last season.
His form and importance to Bologna mean the club would likely demand a substantial fee before even considering a sale.
The latest transfer information indicates that there is currently little reason to expect a January breakthrough.
Ferguson keeps Rangers dream alive
Despite the uncertainty over a potential move, Ferguson has once again acknowledged his long-standing connection with Rangers.
His father, former Ibrox midfielder Derek Ferguson, recently claimed that his son had agreed personal terms with the club during the summer, although Rangers did not submit a formal offer before the deadline.
Ferguson was subsequently asked about his future and whether a move to Rangers could eventually happen.
The midfielder admitted that playing for his boyhood club remains a dream but stressed that his immediate focus is on his career with Bologna.
He also made it clear that nothing was particularly close during the summer and suggested that any potential move remains something for the future.
For now, Rangers appear set to face another wait if they want to bring Ferguson back to Ibrox, with Bologna’s current position making a January deal difficult to see materialising.
