Oliver Sorensen reveals how quickly he decided to join Celtic after agent call

Oliver Sorensen has admitted he needed very little convincing to make the move to Celtic after his agent first informed him of the club’s interest.

The 24-year-old midfielder arrived at Parkhead from Parma on a season-long loan, with Celtic holding an option to make the transfer permanent. Sorensen has already made it clear that he would love the opportunity to remain in Glasgow beyond the current campaign.

The Denmark Under-21 international only moved to Parma last summer after the Serie A club paid around £6.8million to sign him from Midtjylland.

His most productive spell came in Denmark, where he developed a reputation for contributing in the final third. Sorensen recorded 16 goals and 13 assists across 132 appearances for Midtjylland, although his numbers dipped after moving to Italy. He finished last season with one goal and one assist in 42 matches for Parma.

Celtic manager Martin O’Neill wasted no time introducing his latest recruit, handing Sorensen his debut just a day after his transfer was completed.

The midfielder came off the bench in the 63rd minute of Celtic’s 3-0 victory over Aberdeen, replacing goalscorer Benjamin Nygren. He almost marked his first appearance with a goal and has already suggested that he can offer something different to the other midfielders in O’Neill’s squad.

Sorensen has now revealed just how quickly he made up his mind about joining Celtic.

He explained that his agent contacted him several weeks ago to inform him that the Scottish champions were interested. Rather than needing time to consider the proposal, Sorensen immediately made his feelings clear.

“I heard a few weeks ago that there was interest from Celtic. My agent called me and told me it was a possibility,” he said.

“Straight away, I told him, ‘Get this done… I want to go to Celtic’.”

The Danish midfielder is already thinking beyond his temporary spell and hopes his performances will be enough to persuade Celtic to make the move permanent.

“It’s good that it happened,” Sorensen added.

“I hope to do my best this season, and hope to make the deal permanent if I play good enough. So yeah, 100 per cent, I want to stay.”

His eagerness to make the move should please Celtic supporters, with Sorensen clearly determined to establish himself in Glasgow.

He has also been included in Celtic’s Europa League squad, giving him the opportunity to feature when the Hoops begin their campaign against Ferencvaros on September 17.

Before that European opener, Sorensen will have several opportunities to impress domestically. Celtic host St Mirren on Saturday before travelling to St Johnstone on September 9.

Another major fixture follows shortly afterwards, with Celtic facing a trip to Ibrox for their League Cup quarter-final clash with Rangers.

O’Neill is expected to rotate his squad during a busy period, which should give Sorensen further chances to show what he can contribute.

Having already made his first appearance in green and white, the midfielder will now be hoping it is the beginning of a successful Celtic career — and potentially the first step towards turning his loan into a permanent transfer.
