Haissem Hassan Reveals Why He Has Yet to Nail Down a Regular Celtic Starting Spot
Haissem Hassan reveals what is holding him back asCeltic winger targets regular role
Haissem Hassan could become an important figure for Celtic as Martin O’Neill attempts to find the right balance in hisattacking options.
The Egyptian winger made a positive impact during Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Dundee United after being introducedfrom the bench, offering a different dimension to a frontline that had struggled to create enough variety.
Celtic initially deployed natural centre-forwards on either side of Kasper Høgh, but the introduction of Hassan and Jotabrought greater width and attacking threat.
Both players were willing to take on defenders, stretch the opposition and deliver dangerous balls into the penalty area –qualities that had been missing for much of the contest.
That performance came at an important time, with questions being raised about Celtic’s current attacking structure.
Captain Callum McGregor recently questioned whether using three natural strikers across the frontline was a sustainableapproach, with O’Neill subsequently acknowledging that Camilo Durán and Callum Osmand are more comfortableoperating through the middle.
The Celtic manager also highlighted Hassan’s influence against Dundee United, particularly his work on the right flank.
However, the winger recognises that offering something different in attack will not automatically earn him a regularstarting place.
Hassan identifies two areas he must improve
Speaking to Michael Gannon of the Daily Record, the summer signing admitted that he knows exactly what he needs towork on if he wants to establish himself at Parkhead.
Hassan said:
“Defensive-wise I need to improve. On the attacking side I need the numbers on goals and assists.”
His comments underline the demands placed on Celtic’s wide players, who are expected to contribute at both ends of thepitch.
Hassan has already demonstrated his ability to beat opponents and create opportunities, but he is still waiting to registerhis first competitive goal for the Hoops.
He came close to opening his account against Dundee United and believes regular involvement will help him becomemore productive in the final third.
Defensive work is equally important, with O’Neill expecting his wide players to track back and provide support for theirfull-backs when Celtic lose possession.
Shaun Maloney helping Celtic winger settle
Hassan has also been benefiting from the experience of assistant manager Shaun Maloney, who enjoyed a successfulplaying career in attacking positions.
The former Celtic forward has been offering guidance as the winger adapts to the demands of playing for the Scottishchampions.
Hassan acknowledged the value of having Maloney available to help him, saying:
“Having him as a reference point really helps me.”
That support could prove valuable as Celtic look to develop a more effective attacking system, combining natural widthwith the defensive discipline required at the highest level.
Celtic selection battle set to intensify
Hassan’s encouraging display against Dundee United has given O’Neill another option to consider ahead of Sunday’s tripto Falkirk.
The Egyptian provides a natural wide threat on the right, but competition for attacking positions is expected to increase inthe coming weeks.
Yang Hyun-jun is working towards a return, while Jota continues to build his fitness after his lengthy spell on thesidelines.
With Besiktas also due at Celtic Park in the Europa League on Thursday, Hassan has opportunities to make a strongercase for regular involvement.
His own assessment suggests he understands what is required. Improving his defensive contribution while adding moregoals and assists could be the key to turning his promising performances into a consistent place in O’Neill’s starting XI.
