Frank McAvennie breaks silence after backlash over Auston Trusty grief remarks
Frank McAvennie has responded to the criticism he received after questioning Auston Trusty’s absence from Celtic following the death of the defender’s father.

Trusty has been unavailable for selection while dealing with a personal matter, with assistant manager Shaun Maloney previously confirming that the American would not be involved with the squad.
The Celtic defender also paid an emotional tribute to his father on social media, describing him as an incredible person following his passing.
However, McAvennie attracted considerable criticism after questioning why Trusty needed to take so much time away from football to mourn his loss. His comments were widely viewed as insensitive, with many supporters arguing that grieving is a personal experience and that the player should be allowed the time he needs.
The former Celtic striker has since addressed the reaction to his remarks in a statement shared on social media, although he stopped short of issuing a direct apology.
Writing on his Let Me Be Frank account, McAvennie acknowledged that people had taken issue with his comments and admitted that he could have expressed himself differently.
He said he understood why his remarks had been considered insensitive and accepted that he should have been more careful with his choice of words.
McAvennie also stressed that he never intended to show disrespect towards Trusty or his family, while acknowledging that everyone processes grief in their own way.
He explained that his underlying point was that Celtic need the defender back in action, although he conceded that he had communicated that message poorly.
The former striker concluded by wishing Trusty and his family well during what is clearly a difficult period for them.
Trusty’s last appearance for Celtic came against Benfica in the Europa League last month, before he received the devastating news of his father’s death.
With the defender still dealing with his personal loss, his return to the team remains uncertain. Celtic supporters will undoubtedly hope he is given the necessary time and support before making his comeback.
