Former SPFL chief raises £40m Champions League concern over Celtic transfer strategy

Celtic are facing a pivotal Champions League play-off that could have major financial implications, with former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness warning the club may be risking a significant windfall.

The Scottish champions will discover their play-off opponents in Monday’s draw, with Austrian side LASK and Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty among the possible opponents as Martin O’Neill’s side bid to secure a place in the league phase.

Qualification would deliver a substantial financial boost, but Wyness believes Celtic have taken a gamble by not strengthening their squad more aggressively ahead of the tie.

The former SPFL executive questioned whether the club should have invested further during the transfer window, arguing that additional spending could have increased their chances of reaching the competition’s lucrative league stage.

According to Wyness, Champions League qualification could ultimately be worth up to £40 million when participation payments, prize money and related revenue are taken into account.

He suggested Celtic could have justified investing heavily in new signings, believing the potential financial return would far outweigh the initial outlay if the club successfully navigates the play-off.

The first leg of Celtic’s qualifier is scheduled for 18 or 19 August, with the decisive second leg taking place a week later.

With qualification offering one of the biggest financial rewards available to a Scottish club, the upcoming tie is set to be one of the most significant matches of Celtic’s season both on and off the pitch.
