Former Rangers Midfielder Finds New Club as Preston Confirm Championship Move
Former Rangers Midfielder Greg Docherty Breaks Silence After Completing Preston North End Move
Former Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty has expressed his excitement after completing a move to Preston North End, bringing an end to his spell without a club.
The 30-year-old had been available since leaving Charlton Athletic towards the end of the summer transfer window, despite playing an important role in helping the Addicks secure promotion from League One last season.
Docherty captained Charlton during their successful campaign but was subsequently deemed surplus to requirements as the club strengthened ahead of their return to the Championship.
Preston manager Graham Alexander had been interested in bringing the midfielder to Deepdale, and the move has now been finalised.
Docherty delighted to join Preston
The former Rangers player made no secret of his happiness at securing a fresh opportunity in English football.
Speaking to Preston’s official website, Docherty said he was proud to become part of a club with such a rich history.
“I’m really proud to be here, to have this badge on my chest and to be part of a club that’s steeped in history,” he said.
“When I told my family, they were all excited and willing me to get it done.
“I’m just thankful that we managed to do it.
“Coming down from Scotland and playing in England, Preston’s a very good team to get to for my family, and I’ve always kept an eye on them.”
Midfielder impressed by Alexander’s demands
Docherty has already spent time training with his new teammates and believes there are encouraging signs ahead of his first appearance.
He revealed that his early conversations with Alexander and the coaching staff left a positive impression, while the manager’s determination to improve Preston’s situation has motivated him to contribute.
“From the moment I walked in here, I got a really good feeling from speaking to the manager and all the coaching staff,” he explained.
“When I see how passionate the manager is about turning our current situation around, it excites me, and I want to also help change things.
“I see real quality in the dressing room, and I know we can improve if we keep working hard.”
The midfielder also praised the intensity of training at Deepdale, suggesting the demanding sessions have already helped him feel sharper.
“The manager’s training demands are very high, and I’ve come in and really enjoyed it.
“I’ve enjoyed the soreness after it, I’ve enjoyed the tiredness after it, but I feel much better for it, and all the lads do too.
“The boys are saying they’re getting fitter, which is massive in this league, and I just can’t wait to get going alongside them out on the pitch.”
Alexander explains why Preston wanted Docherty
Alexander is equally pleased to have secured the midfielder’s signature, highlighting his leadership experience and previous success in the English leagues.
The Preston boss believes Docherty has the qualities needed to make a positive contribution as the club look to improve their fortunes.
“We’re really pleased to bring Greg in,” he said.
“He’s been a captain, won promotions, and knows the game inside out.
“Greg’s vocal, fit, and motivated, which are all the key things you look for in a professional footballer.”
Docherty now has the opportunity to make an impact at Deepdale after an unexpected departure from Charlton, with Preston hoping his experience can help strengthen their midfield.
