FC Nurnberg explore legal route in Southampton dispute

Southampton could face another off-field headache, with German club FC Nurnberg reportedly considering their legal options over a clause included in Caspar Jander’s transfer to St Mary’s.

Jander joined Southampton from Nurnberg last summer, with the deal containing a £1 million additional payment that would have been activated if the Saints secured promotion to the Premier League.

However, Southampton’s failure to achieve promotion meant the clause was not triggered, leaving Nurnberg unhappy with the situation.

Nurnberg sporting director Joti Chatzialexiou previously said the club would investigate its legal options, and he has now confirmed that their lawyers are still reviewing the matter.

Speaking to German media outlet BILD, Chatzialexiou explained that the club is continuing to assess whether it has a potential claim, although there is currently no immediate deadline forcing them to act.

Nurnberg are reportedly waiting until the transfer window closes before deciding their next step. The German club appears keen to avoid disrupting any potential transfer involving Jander, particularly because a future sale could activate other financial clauses in the original agreement.

One possible way for Southampton to resolve the dispute could be to sell Jander this summer. BILD reports that Bundesliga clubs VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig are among the teams showing interest in taking the midfielder back to Germany.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the transfer agreement, there has reportedly been no formal legal action against Southampton so far.

That includes any potential claims from Southampton players who may have missed out on promotion-related bonuses following the club’s failure to return to the Premier League.

It is also important to stress that Jander himself is not involved in Nurnberg’s potential claim, and there is no suggestion that the player has any grievance over the situation.
