Ex-Rangers F.C. star explains why he rejected Premier League giants for Ibrox switch
Former Rangers F.C. winger Chris Burke has revealed why he turned down the chance to join Arsenal F.C. in favour of a move to Ibrox, admitting Rangers made him feel valued and gave him a sense of belonging at a crucial stage of his career.
Burke, who had previously spent time with Celtic Boys Club before moving into Rangers’ youth setup, explained that his decision in 2000 was heavily influenced by the environment he found at Ibrox. Despite attracting interest from Arsenal, the former winger said Rangers stood out because of the welcoming atmosphere around the club and the feeling that he was already part of a football family.

The ex-winger also credited former manager Dick Advocaat for playing a major role in his development, recalling how he was regularly invited to train with the first team at a young age. Burke said those experiences offered invaluable lessons and gave him an early understanding of what was required to succeed at the highest level.
His breakthrough eventually came under Alex McLeish, with Burke famously scoring just 90 seconds into his debut against Kilmarnock F.C.. Reflecting on the moment, he described it as a dream start and praised McLeish for showing faith in youth players, adding that already being familiar with senior teammates from training helped him settle quickly.
After leaving Rangers, Burke enjoyed spells south of the border with clubs including Cardiff City F.C., Birmingham City F.C. and Nottingham Forest F.C. before returning to Scotland with Kilmarnock. However, he believes the standards, discipline and values instilled during his time at Rangers laid the foundation for the rest of his career.
Burke also paid tribute to legendary Rangers kitman Jimmy Bell, describing him as a huge influence during his early years at the club. He recalled helping Bell with first-team kit duties before and after matches, saying the responsibility taught him discipline and important life lessons.
Looking back, Burke insisted choosing Rangers over Arsenal proved to be the right call, stressing that training alongside elite players and being surrounded by strong characters helped him flourish both on and off the pitch.
