David Storch explains why Sheffield Wednesday chose Dave Challinor as new manager

Sheffield Wednesday have entered a new era under Dave Challinor, with owner David Storch finally sharing his thoughts following the club’s decision to appoint the experienced manager.

Storch faced a major decision after Wednesday parted company with Henrik Pedersen last month. The Dane had been in charge since the start of the previous campaign, but consecutive defeats against Notts County and Doncaster Rovers intensified pressure on his position.

Despite previously showing faith in Pedersen, Wednesday’s eighth-place position and growing frustration among supporters eventually forced a change in the dugout.

The recruitment process that followed proved relatively straightforward, with Challinor emerging as the preferred candidate. The former Stockport County boss had reportedly been keen on the opportunity to take charge at Hillsborough, should the position become available.

After leaving Stockport following their play-off final defeat to Bolton Wanderers last season, Challinor now has the opportunity to lead Wednesday’s promotion ambitions in the Steel City.

And following his official unveiling, Storch has explained why the club’s hierarchy believes the 51-year-old is the right man to lead their project.

David Storch shares his thoughts on Dave Challinor’s Sheffield Wednesday appointment

Storch has expressed his delight at securing Challinor’s services, highlighting the backing he has received from the club’s leadership team.

Challinor previously enjoyed considerable success working alongside current Wednesday sporting director Simon Wilson at Stockport County, guiding the club from the National League to consecutive League One play-off finishes within five years.

That track record appears to have played a significant role in Wednesday’s decision, with Storch confident that the new manager can help the club continue moving in the right direction.

Speaking through Sheffield Wednesday’s official media channels, Storch confirmed that Challinor’s appointment had received unanimous backing from the board following an extensive recruitment process.

He said: “Dave’s appointment has the unanimous support of our board, following a thorough recruitment process expertly led by Simon Wilson, and reflects our shared commitment to the long-term future of Sheffield Wednesday.

“We are still at the beginning of an ambitious journey. Significant progress has been made in rebuilding the foundations of the club, but we recognise there is much more work ahead.”

Storch also stressed that Wednesday’s ambitions extend beyond immediate results, insisting that establishing a recognisable playing identity and building sustainable success will be crucial to the club’s long-term plans.

“Our ambitions remain clear, but our progress cannot be defined by the outcome of one moment or season alone.

“We must establish a clear footballing identity, consistent standards and a culture capable of delivering sustained success.

“That journey will require patience, resilience and collective commitment. Progress will not always be straightforward, but we believe Dave has the leadership, character and determination to help us achieve our ambitions.

“We are delighted to welcome Dave to Sheffield Wednesday and look forward to building the next chapter together.”

Dave Challinor’s contract shows Sheffield Wednesday’s long-term commitment

Since completing his takeover following Sheffield Wednesday’s turbulent period under former chairman Dejphon Chansiri, Storch has made it clear that rebuilding the club requires more than ambitious statements.

His decision to hand Challinor a long-term contract reinforces that approach, with the new manager reportedly tied to Hillsborough until the summer of 2030.

The length of the agreement represents a significant show of confidence in Challinor’s ability to deliver the club’s objectives.

Rather than making a short-term appointment focused solely on immediate results, Wednesday appear determined to build a stable structure capable of sustaining progress over several seasons.

For Challinor, the challenge will be to translate his previous achievements at Stockport into success at Hillsborough, where supporters will be eager to see the club return to a stronger position.

Storch has made his backing clear. Now, the attention turns to whether Challinor can justify that confidence and help Sheffield Wednesday deliver on their promotion ambitions.
