Chris Sutton Sums Up Celtic Situation in Just a Few Words
Chris Sutton’s Simple Celtic Verdict Speaks Volumes After Celta Vigo Defeat
Chris Sutton has delivered a pointed assessment of Celtic’s latest Europa League disappointment after Martin O’Neill’s side suffered another damaging defeat on Thursday night.
The Hoops appeared to have given themselves a platform for success when Mika Baur found the net two minutes after the interval against Celta Vigo.
However, that optimism quickly disappeared as the Spanish visitors struck twice in the space of three minutes to turn the game around and leave Celtic facing further questions about their European performances.
The result marked Celta Vigo’s first victory in this season’s competition and extended Celtic’s losing run in the Europa League to three matches.
With the Scottish champions languishing near the bottom of the 36-team league phase, their hopes of progressing are becoming increasingly difficult to sustain.
Sutton wasted little time sharing his reaction on social media, delivering a brief verdict that reflected the frustration many Celtic supporters would have felt at full-time.
“I’d like to say tonight’s result was a surprise…” the former Celtic striker wrote.
The remark carried an unmistakable sense of disappointment, particularly given the pattern that has developed across Celtic’s European campaign.
Celtic’s European struggles continue
Thursday’s defeat was another setback for O’Neill, whose side have struggled to maintain their domestic standards when facing opposition from across the continent.
The loss to Celta Vigo followed a disappointing evening against Benfica, when Celtic conceded an early penalty and found themselves three goals behind at half-time.
There was a noticeable improvement after the break, with the hosts creating opportunities and coming close to reducing the deficit. However, missed chances and a late fourth goal for the Portuguese side ensured their recovery never materialised.
Celtic were left to reflect on another performance in which promising spells failed to translate into a result.
Their opening defeat to Ferencváros had also exposed familiar weaknesses. Baur scored shortly before half-time to restore parity, only for the Hungarian side to regain the lead before the interval and add another goal after the restart.
Across those matches, Celtic have repeatedly found themselves unable to respond effectively when opponents gain the upper hand.
Celtic’s mentality under scrutiny
The latest defeat has intensified concerns about Celtic’s ability to handle adversity against stronger European opposition.
Although the club have enjoyed positive moments domestically, their performances in Europe have raised questions about their defensive organisation, game management and capacity to recover from setbacks.
Celtic Park has long been regarded as one of British football’s most intimidating venues, with visiting teams often facing a difficult atmosphere in Glasgow.
Yet recent European results have given supporters reasons to question whether that advantage is being translated into performances on the pitch.
Against Celta Vigo, Celtic briefly looked capable of taking control after Baur’s opener, but their advantage disappeared almost immediately.
That collapse will concern O’Neill as he attempts to find solutions to the problems affecting his team.
Sutton’s short social media post offered no detailed explanation of what went wrong, but its pointed wording reflected the growing frustration surrounding Celtic’s European campaign.
For the manager and his players, the priority is now to address those recurring shortcomings and demonstrate that they can compete more consistently at this level.
With three consecutive Europa League defeats behind them, Celtic need a response if they are to revive their hopes of progressing in the competition.
