Championship Side Interested in Southampton Striker Cameron Archer on Loan

Southampton striker Cameron Archer has reportedly attracted interest from a Championship club as the transfer deadline approaches.

The 24-year-old could potentially leave St Mary’s before the window closes on Tuesday, September 1, having found himself on the fringes of the Southampton squad at the beginning of the new campaign.

Archer has been named among the substitutes for both of Saints’ Championship fixtures so far but has yet to make an appearance.

Since arriving from Aston Villa in 2024 in a deal reportedly worth around £15 million, the forward has struggled to establish himself at Southampton. He has scored 11 goals across 77 appearances for the club.

Archer was previously linked with a permanent move to West Bromwich Albion earlier in the summer, with the Baggies showing serious interest in taking him away from the south coast.

However, the latest reports suggest another Championship side could now provide him with an alternative route. Preston North End are believed to be considering a loan deal for the striker.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Preston are preparing to compete for Archer’s signature after reportedly being unable to meet Sheffield United’s asking price for Tom Cannon.

Preston are also expected to lose striker Milutin Osmajic, who is set to join Italian club Genoa. That departure would leave the Lilywhites looking for another attacking option, potentially opening the door for Archer to make the move to Deepdale.

With the transfer deadline fast approaching, Archer’s situation at Southampton could therefore become one to watch, particularly if Preston step up their efforts to secure a temporary deal.
