Celtic’s Forgotten Summer Signing Finally Set for Martin O’Neill Debut
Celtic’s Low-Key Summer Signing Finally Closes in on Martin O’Neill Debut
Celtic supporters could finally get their first glimpse of summer recruit Landon Emenalo this weekend, with the Chelsea loanee reportedly in contention for a place in Martin O’Neill’s squad to face Hearts.
The 18-year-old arrived at Celtic on a season-long loan on September 2, shortly before the summer transfer window closed. However, an injury sustained around the time of his move prevented him from immediately joining the first-team setup.
Instead, Emenalo was forced to focus on his rehabilitation, leaving Celtic fans waiting for an opportunity to see what the highly regarded youngster could bring to the squad.
There has been gradual progress in recent weeks, with the teenager moving closer to a return to full training. Now, the possibility of being included in Sunday’s matchday squad represents a significant step forward after almost seven weeks on the sidelines.
Celtic face Hearts at Celtic Park in a 3pm kick-off, with O’Neill potentially able to call upon a new option as his side looks to strengthen its defensive depth.
Emenalo was brought in to provide additional cover at left-back, a position where Kieran Tierney’s fitness record has made reliable alternatives particularly important. The teenager can also operate in central midfield, giving the Celtic manager another potential option.
Despite his lack of senior competitive experience, Emenalo arrives in Glasgow with an impressive youth pedigree. During his time at Chelsea, he was part of teams that won the Premier League 2 title and the Under-18 national championship.
He is also the son of former Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo, who enjoyed a prominent role at Stamford Bridge.
However, the immediate priority for the youngster will be to establish himself in O’Neill’s plans and begin his senior career at Celtic.
Being included in the squad would not necessarily guarantee playing time, particularly with the demands of a competitive Premiership fixture against Hearts. Nevertheless, it would represent an encouraging development for a player who has spent much of his early Celtic career working towards fitness.
The potential return also comes at an important time for the Hoops, with O’Neill continuing to manage his squad amid a busy domestic and European schedule.
For Celtic supporters, Emenalo’s possible involvement would finally provide an opportunity to see the club’s low-key summer recruit in action, after his injury delayed the start of his loan spell.
Sunday’s meeting with Hearts could therefore mark the beginning of a new chapter for the 18-year-old, even if his first competitive minutes remain uncertain.
