Celtic Identify Kieran McKenna as Leading Managerial Target But £8m Complication Emerges

Celtic have reportedly identified Kieran McKenna as their preferred candidate to become the club’s next permanent manager, although a significant compensation demand could complicate any potential appointment.

Martin O’Neill is facing growing uncertainty over his position at Parkhead following an inconsistent run of results, with questions continuing to emerge about whether he will remain in charge beyond the current campaign.

McKenna is understood to have strong support within Celtic and is high on the club’s list of potential successors.

The former Ipswich Town boss left Portman Road during the summer after guiding the club to promotion, meaning he is available to take charge immediately. However, that does not necessarily mean Celtic could secure his services without paying a substantial fee.

According to Football Insider, Ipswich included financial protection in their agreement with McKenna, meaning Celtic could be required to pay approximately £8million if they want to appoint him.

That figure is believed to be a major obstacle for the Scottish champions as they consider their next move.

McKenna tops Celtic’s managerial shortlist

Celtic’s interest in McKenna is not thought to be new, with Football Insider previously reporting on 25 October that the 39-year-old had influential supporters behind the scenes at Parkhead.

The club are expected to consider several candidates as they plan for the future, regardless of whether O’Neill leaves before the end of the season.

Speaking on Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, the outlet’s reporter explained that McKenna’s compensation arrangement could make the situation more complicated.

He said: “The one really being mentioned is Kieran McKenna, but he obviously has this big, I think, it’s an £8million compensation fee.

“They would need to pay that to Ipswich if they wanted to appoint them, even though on paper he is available after he decided to leave Ipswich in the summer.

“That could obviously sort of throw a spanner in the works for Celtic. So it does make that decision maybe a little bit more difficult.”

Although McKenna is viewed as a leading option, the financial commitment required could force Celtic to consider alternative candidates.

O’Neill’s Celtic future remains uncertain

The managerial speculation comes amid mounting pressure on O’Neill, whose side have struggled to produce consistent performances this season.

Celtic have won just four of their previous 11 matches in all competitions, losing six during that period.

Football Insider reported on 6 November that the 74-year-old was moving closer to the exit door, with the club potentially facing a decision sooner rather than later.

However, the situation has become less urgent following Celtic’s 3-2 Europa League victory over Besiktas.

That result delivered their first win in this season’s European campaign and provided some relief after a difficult run of performances.

O’Neill could still remain in charge for the immediate future, with Celtic understood to be reluctant to make a rushed decision.

The club currently hold a four-point advantage over Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership, but their position could become an important factor in determining the manager’s future.

A defeat that results in Celtic surrendering first place could increase the pressure on the club to act.

For now, McKenna appears to be a leading name in Celtic’s succession planning, but the reported £8million compensation requirement presents a major financial consideration.
